“Harefield Horticulture is a certified organic farm high in the Bellthorpe range. We grow Hass avocadoes, which are harvested in the Spring and early summer.
Being certified organic we don’t use any herbicides or pesticides, so our avocados tastes like they should, and our farming methods are beneficial to the soil and overall farm health.
Background
Martin and Jill emigrated from the UK in 2010, looking for a change of lifestyle. In 2013, they bought an avocado farm – definitely different! They successfully converted the farm to organic production, using regenerative methods to improve soil and to build up the trees’ natural resistance to pests/diseases.
Their move to organic gave them direct access to customers and they received excellent feedback, which confirmed their production choices. They have since diversified the farm’s outputs to improve profitability.

Did you know?
Harefield Horticulture is named so because the Dobbs family come from a small place in the UK called Harefield and because they have a lot of hares here on their property!
Hass avocados don’t ripen on the tree – ripening starts when picked, but you must take the stalk out!
They have one tree that has reverted to its root-stock of ‘Bacon’ avocado – the fruit resembles a dragon’s egg!”
